Sorbitan Olivate
Science & Benefits
Sorbitan Olivate is a mild, sugar-based ester formed from the dehydration of sorbitol and the esterification with olive oil fatty acids. Often paired with Cetearyl Olivate (forming the popular trade blend Olivem 1000), it functions as a potent humectant and emulsifier that provides a unique silky skin feel. Chemically, it acts as a 'barrier restorer' by filling the gaps between skin cells with moisture-retaining lipids. However, its olive-derived origin means it is rich in oleic and palmitic acid components. For users with a healthy microbiome, it is an excellent hydrator, but for those prone to fungal-related congestion, these fatty acids can inadvertently trigger inflammatory papules by feeding acne-causing yeasts.
