Sorbitan Laurate
Science & Benefits
Sorbitan Laurate is a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier derived from the sugar alcohol sorbitol and the fatty acid lauric acid. In cosmetic chemistry, it is used to stabilize water-in-oil emulsions, providing a smooth, spreadable texture. While its comedogenic risk is moderate, it is a significant 'Red Flag' for individuals suffering from Malassezia Folliculitis (Fungal Acne). The lauric acid component serves as a primary carbon source (food) for the Malassezia yeast, potentially exacerbating fungal breakouts. For standard acne-prone skin, it is relatively safe, but its presence in leave-on products should be noted by sensitive users.
Safety Alerts
Fungal Acne: This ingredient is a lipid/ester that can feed Malassezia yeast. Avoid if you have active FA bumps.
