Science & Benefits

Sodium Hydroxide is a highly inorganic, alkaline compound used in microscopic amounts in skincare as a pH adjuster. In its concentrated 'raw' form, it is a potent caustic agent (Lye) with an irritancy rating of 5/5; however, in a finished cosmetic formulation, it undergoes a chemical reaction to neutralize acidic components. This process brings the final product to a skin-compatible pH (typically 4.5–5.5), ensuring the formula does not disrupt the skin's acid mantle. Once the reaction is complete, the Sodium Hydroxide is no longer present as an active irritant. It is completely non-comedogenic and serves a critical safety function by preventing products from being too acidic for topical application.
