Allantoin

Allantoin is a diureide of glyoxylic acid, frequently extracted from the comfrey plant. It is a potent keratolytic agent, meaning it helps shed dead skin cells by softening the 'intercellular cement' (desmosomes). It is zero-comedogenic and zero-irritant. In an acne database, it is a 'bulletproof' soothing agent that increases the water content of the extracellular matrix, facilitating the smooth shedding of cells that would otherwise clog pores.
